Built for shooters who want suppressor-ready training time, not a fragile range toy
Most modern .22 LR pistols ask you to choose: a budget plinker that fights you with feed issues, or a serious target gun that costs three times what the ammunition will. The Smith & Wesson M&P 22X was built around the 1/2 x 28 threaded muzzle that fits standard rimfire suppressors, with an anodized aluminum optic-cut slide, a 20-round factory magazine that genuinely holds 20, and a flat-face trigger that measures around 3 lbs on a Lyman scale per The Firearm Blog's 1000-round review. It is a purpose-built rimfire trainer and suppressor host, and the spec sheet reflects that.
The M&P 22X ships in two configurations: the standard 20-round full-capacity variant, and the 10-round compliant variant restricted to Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. Both share the same frame, sights, barrel, threading, and optic-cut slide. Capacity is the only meaningful difference.
Key Features
- 1/2 x 28 Threaded Barrel. Factory-installed thread adapter fits the standard rimfire suppressor pattern. Wrench included for removal. Thread protector sold separately, which is worth flagging up front so it does not surprise you at the bench.
- 20+1 Round Capacity (10+1 Compliant Variant). The factory magazines genuinely top out at 20 rounds, not the 25 some competitors fit into 20-round mags. Two magazines included with each variant.
- Anodized Aluminum Optic-Cut Slide. Per The Firearm Blog's review, the slide is cut for the RMSc footprint and the Holosun K-pattern, two of the most common micro red dot footprints on subcompact and competition optics. The rear iron sight typically needs to come off to mount most optics.
- HiViz LiteWave H3 Fiber Optic Front Sight. Bright, high-contrast pickup in daylight without batteries. Paired with a blacked-out square notch rear sight that lets the front sight do the work.
- Flat-Face Trigger with Crisp Break. Internal hammer-fired action with a defined wall and a clean break. TFB's 1000-round review measured the pull at right around 3 lbs and called it a contender for the best factory trigger in this class of .22 LR pistols.
- Slim Grip, 1911-Style Profile. The M&P 22X drops the legacy M&P 22's replaceable backstrap for a slimmer 1911-style grip that allows a high, repeatable hold. Buyers with smaller hands should handle one before purchase; the slim profile is built around a higher and more forward hand position.
- Ambidextrous Manual Thumb Safety. Functional from either side. Easy to engage from a standard firing grip without breaking the line of the slide.
- Reversible Magazine Catch. Right-handed out of the box, reversible to left-handed operation.
- Picatinny-Style Front Rail. Integrated rail on the frame accepts standard lights and lasers.
- Loaded Chamber Indicator Cutout. Steel breech face includes a small cutout that lets you visually confirm a chambered round without retracting the slide. Not listed on the manufacturer's spec sheet but confirmed on hand by TFB.
- Made in the USA. Manufactured domestically by Smith & Wesson in Maryville, Tennessee.
- Smith & Wesson Limited Warranty plus Lifetime Service Policy. The Limited Warranty covers defects in material and workmanship for one year from purchase. The Lifetime Service Policy continues coverage on functional defects for the lifetime of the original owner, excluding finish, grips, magazines, and sights. Registration with Smith & Wesson within 30 days of purchase is required to activate the Lifetime Service Policy.
Two honest weaknesses worth knowing up front: the 20-round magazines run tight at full capacity until broken in (the last few rounds require deliberate pressure), and the iron rear sight typically has to come off to mount most red dot optics. Per TFB's 1000-round test, both are minor and resolved by handling.
Who the M&P 22X Is For
Suppressor Hosts
The 22X's reason for being. The 1/2 x 28 threaded muzzle with the included thread adapter accepts standard rimfire suppressors with no gunsmithing. TFB ran three different suppressors through their 1000-round test with strong sound suppression across CCI Standard, Mini-Mag, Clean-22 sub-sonic, Blazer, Federal Champion, and Remington Thunderbolt loads. If you already own a rimfire can, the 22X is one of the most factory-ready hosts in production today. If you do not, the 2AD Plinky .22 Suppressor is our in-house pairing: a 5.2-ounce, 5.3-inch direct-thread 1/2 x 28 suppressor printed as a single monolithic piece in NovaNap ceramic-reinforced superalloy, full-auto rated on .22 LR, with the federal NFA tax stamp at $0 as of January 1, 2026.
Centerfire Shooters Training Down
For shooters who already run a centerfire M&P, a Glock, or a similar duty-class semi-auto and want low-cost trigger time without burning centerfire ammunition, the 22X serves as an effective training analog. The controls (slide stop, reversible mag catch, ambidextrous thumb safety) mirror modern semi-auto patterns, and the flat-face trigger delivers a similar break feel. Lucky Gunner's 1000-round review positions the 22X as an "ideal training stand-in for full-sized centerfire pistols."
Kit Gun and Pest Control
The 4.1-inch barrel, light weight (16.32 oz), and 20-round magazine make the 22X a credible kit gun for the truck, the pack, or the property. Guns.com's review calls it a "perfect kit gun for hunting and pest control." Pair it with CCI Mini-Mag 36-grain hollow points for terminal performance on small game and pest at typical .22 LR ranges.
Red Dot Optic Hosts
The optic-cut slide drops red dots on directly with no adapter plate. The slide is cut for the RMSc footprint (industry-standard subcompact pattern) and the Holosun K-pattern (used on Holosun EPS Carry and SCS Carry optics), per TFB's first-hand examination. If you already own a Holosun K or an RMSc-pattern optic from Shield, Trijicon, Sig, or Crimson Trace, the 22X gives you a slide that accepts it without machining or an adapter.

Configuration and Compatibility
The M&P 22X ships with a 1/2 x 28 threaded barrel adapter installed and a wrench to remove it, an anodized aluminum slide cut for two common micro red dot footprints, and two factory magazines. Here is what it fits and accepts:
- Suppressors: Any 1/2 x 28 rimfire suppressor mounts via the included adapter. 2A Daddy's in-house pairing is the 2AD Plinky .22 Suppressor, a monolithic 3D-printed NovaNap rimfire suppressor rated for .22 LR (full-auto), .22 WMR, .17 HMR, .17 WSM, and 5.7x28, at 5.2 oz and 5.3 inches. TFB confirmed compatibility on the 22X platform with Zer0 & Sons 1225, Angstadt Reticent 22, and Fletcher Rifle Works Taquito during their 1000-round review. The adapter is also factory-removable if you want to run the muzzle bare. Thread protector sold separately.
- Red Dot Optics: The slide is cut for the RMSc footprint (Shield RMSc, Sig Romeo Zero series, Holosun 407K/507K family standard pattern) and the Holosun K-pattern (Holosun EPS Carry, SCS Carry). Per TFB, the iron rear sight typically needs to be removed to mount most optics. Confirm specific optic compatibility before purchase if you are buying the optic and the pistol together.
- Lights and Lasers: The integrated Picatinny-style front rail accepts standard pistol lights and laser units rated for rimfire frame profiles.
- Magazines: Uses M&P 22X-specific magazines (S&W SKU 14485 for 20-round, SKU 14484 for 10-round). NOT compatible with legacy M&P 22 magazines, M&P centerfire magazines, or M&P 22 Magnum magazines.
- Ammunition: Standard-velocity, high-velocity, and most subsonic .22 LR loads. TFB's 1000-round review reported strong reliability with CCI Standard, CCI Mini-Mag, CCI Clean-22, Blazer, Federal Champion, and Remington Thunderbolt. ELEY Contact Subsonic Semi-Auto failed to cycle in their testing.

Frequently Asked Questions
The M&P 22X is a recent (late 2025) full-size .22 LR pistol from Smith & Wesson designed for plinking, training, suppressor host use, and small game or pest control. Reviewers including The Firearm Blog and Lucky Gunner have published 1000-round tests with strong reliability across CCI, Federal, Blazer, and Remington loads. Honest weaknesses: 20-round magazines are tight to load at full capacity until broken in, and the iron rear sight typically must come off to mount most red dot optics.
Per The Firearm Blog's hands-on review, the M&P 22X slide is cut for the RMSc footprint (the industry-standard subcompact micro red dot pattern used by Shield RMSc, Sig Romeo Zero, and Holosun 407K/507K-class optics) and the Holosun K-pattern (used on the Holosun EPS Carry and SCS Carry). The rear iron sight typically needs to be removed to clear most optics. Confirm specific optic fitment before purchase if you have a particular red dot in mind.
Yes. The barrel ships factory-threaded 1/2 x 28 with a thread adapter and wrench in the box. Any standard rimfire suppressor with a 1/2 x 28 mount fits directly. 2A Daddy's in-house option is the 2AD Plinky .22 Suppressor, a monolithic NovaNap rimfire suppressor with a Limited Lifetime warranty and a $0 federal NFA tax stamp as of January 1, 2026. The Firearm Blog also tested the 22X with Zer0 & Sons 1225, Angstadt Reticent 22, and Fletcher Rifle Works Taquito during their 1000-round review with strong sound suppression across CCI, Federal, Blazer, and Remington loads. A thread protector is sold separately if you choose to run the muzzle bare.
The M&P 22X is a full-size pistol (7.25-inch overall length, 20-round magazine) with an optic-cut slide and a HiViz fiber optic front sight. The M&P 22 Compact is a smaller pistol (6.67-inch overall length, 10-round magazine) without an optic cut and with white dot iron sights. Both have threaded 1/2 x 28 barrels. The 22X is the newer (2025) design with a slim 1911-style grip; the 22 Compact retains the legacy M&P 22 grip frame. See the comparison table above for a full side-by-side.
Yes. The M&P 22X is a handgun and federal law requires it ship to a Federal Firearms License (FFL) holder for transfer. You complete ATF Form 4473 and a background check at your receiving FFL before taking possession. If you select 2A Daddy as the receiving FFL, our transfer fee is $35. If you select your own local FFL dealer, their fee may differ; contact them directly for their transfer pricing.
We ship the M&P 22X via FFL transfer to most states. California and Massachusetts buyers cannot purchase this model new. New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Illinois, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington buyers should select the 10-round compliant variant (SKU SW-MP-22X-10RD) if available. Contact us to confirm we can ship to your state.
Smith & Wesson covers the M&P 22X under two policies. The Limited Warranty covers defects in material and workmanship for one year from the date of purchase by the original owner. The Lifetime Service Policy continues coverage on functional defects for the lifetime of the original owner, excluding finish, grips, magazines, and sights. Activation of the Lifetime Service Policy requires returning the Product Registration Card within 30 days of purchase. 2A Daddy also offers a 30-day return policy on the firearm prior to FFL transfer; once the 4473 transfer is complete and you take possession, federal regulations limit returns.
Two are worth knowing before purchase. First, the factory 20-round magazines are tight to load at full capacity until broken in (the last few rounds require deliberate pressure on the magazine tabs). Second, the iron rear sight typically must be removed to mount most red dot optics because of the cut geometry. Both are documented in The Firearm Blog's and Lucky Gunner's 1000-round reviews, and both are minor enough that they did not affect overall reliability across their combined 2000+ rounds of testing.
