BUYING PROCESS

HOW TO PURCHASE A SUPPRESSOR

  • Many people believe that owning a suppressor (often called a silencer) is illegal. The truth is that suppressors are legal to own in most of the United States.
    • If you are at least 21 years old, live in a state where suppressors are legal, and can pass a background check, you can purchase one today.
      • Suppressors are currently illegal in: California, D.C., Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.
        • Suppressors are regulated under the National Firearms Act (NFA), which requires registration with the ATF and approval before taking possession. While this may sound complicated, the process has become easier than ever thanks to modern electronic filing systems.
          • In addition, the traditional $200 tax stamp required for suppressor transfers is currently $0, removing one of the biggest barriers that previously existed for buyers.
            • With improved ATF eForms processing and simplified paperwork, purchasing a suppressor today is faster and more accessible than ever before.

                • Before your Form 4 can be submitted, you must create an ATF eForms account.
                • You can create your eForms account by visiting ATF EFORMS
                • Your username and PIN are extremely important, because they are required to digitally certify and submit your Form 4.
                • Example username format: John Smith → JSMITH12345
                • Make sure your email address matches your purchase information and to safe this information somewhere safe.

                STEP 4

                COMPLETE YOUR FORM 4

                • Once your suppressor is purchased and your ATF eForms account is created, the next step is submitting ATF Form 4.
                • Form 4 is the application used to transfer an NFA item (such as a suppressor) to a civilian owner.
                • Your dealer will help you complete this process.
                • The submission includes: ATF Form 4, fingerprints, passport-style photo, background check, personal information, responsible person, and the serialized NFA information.
                • There are two common ways to complete this: In-store dealer submissions & Kiosks like Silencer Shop

                STEP 5

FORM 4 SUBMISSION AND WAIT TIME

                • Once your Form 4 is submitted through the ATF eForms system, the ATF begins processing your application.
                • This includes: FBI background check, application review, and registration approval.
                • While approvals used to take up to 9 months, many applications are now being approved in less than 30 days, with some even clearing within a week.
                • We’ll keep you updated throughout the process, and once approved, the dealer will notify you that your suppressor is ready for pickup.

                STEP 6

                • During pickup you will need to: Complete a Form 4473 (standard firearm background form), present a valid ID, and take possession of your suppressor.
